Power Shift Pacific: Youth Looking Beyond Disaster?

What is Power Shift Pacific : Youth Looking Beyond Disaster?

With up to a hundred young people coming together from across the Pacific Islands, we thought we should make the most of the opportunity. That’s why we’ve partnered up with the NZ National Commission for UNESCO and are excited to announce the “Power Shift Pacific Youth Looking Beyond Disaster” forum, from  4-6 December (yes, immediately before Power Shift NZ-Pacific).

The forum is the result of an action plan developed by Pacific participants at the first UNESCO Asia Pacific Youth Looking Beyond Disasters Forum held in Christchurch in 2011. The vision was to host a forum that would provide an avenue for Pacific Island and Maori youth to share their experiences in order to build community resilience to disasters and climate change through youth leadership and action.

The forum will take place in Auckland from 4 -6 December and will give Pacific Island and Maori youth the opportunity to enhance their leadership skills and build their capacity in areas of disaster risk reduction, management and response, and decrease vulnerabilities of island communities. Time will also be spent preparing for a local action campaign that will be launched at Power Shift NZ-Pacific and implemented across the Pacific Islands.

Participants will be able to share experiences of natural and man-made disasters and develop action plans that meet the needs and aspirations of young Pasifika and Maori youth.

Registration is free and accommodation and meals will be provided by the NZ National Commission for UNESCO (for a limited number of participants). Please write an expression of interest stating why you would like to participate in the forum, and include your name and age to Vicki Soanes vicki.soanes@minedu.govt.nz.

Applications should be received by Thursday 1st of November 2012.
